Health 2.0

Just started a health-centric blog about the Web 2.0 movement and how it relates to getting and sharing online health information. Looks like there's a lot of rooom for disruptive change in the online health space and I hope to be part of it. I'm calling the blog Health 2.0.

Is the browser the new desktop?

Starting using Flock, perhaps the first Web 2.0 browser today. In fact, I'm writing this blog post via the blog-button which is part of Flock's core browser toolset- lets see if it works. Most of what you'd see as plugins on other browsers are pre-populated core tools in Flock- tagging (del.icio.us) blogging (several platforms compatible), RSS feed-reading, etc, are all built in. Btw, on a semi-related strain, given that everything from storage to heavy applications seems to be going web-based now, I'm starting to wonder whether the browser will soon replace the desktop, at least in terms of the experience. In other words, you start your computer and the first thing you see is your browser window opened to your start page, rather than your normal desktop with the XP start button, toolbar, desktop area, etc. That situation would already be a shortcut for me, as the first thing I do when I start my computer is "leave" the desktop and open my browser :)

Google launches Google Reader, etc.

Here at the Web 2.0 conference, the Google Labs man just announced the launch of Google Reader (you need a Gmail account, I believe, to try it)  Here's what Jeff Clavier has to say about it. Haven't really tried it yet, but the UI is very Google-esque, K.I.S.S. principles, speed, central search component, etc.

Oh, and... AOL buys Weblogs Inc

Yep, social software is officially mainstream.

The scoop

If you haven't heard already, yesterday it was announced that Wondir Inc was acquired by Revolution Health Group. Feel free to check out the press release or the article in Information Week. Needless to say, we're very happy about it and are proud to be part of such a consumer-empowering health company.

Please be assured that the acquisition will not disrupt the current community at Wondir.com. In fact, we only expect it to make the community better. Although we will have an entity focused on health-related Q&A, the current entity focused on all categories (Wondir.com) will continue to grow, thrive and improve.

Of course, feel free to ping us if you have any questions about the news.

Free + Open + Simple = Activity

Thanks Pete. Yes, the quantity is remarkable, probably b/c we make it so easy to ask and answer, and it's of course free. Most Q&A sites either make it relatively difficult to ask or answer, are pay-per-answer, or both, and have less activity as a consquence. Compared to sites like Google Answers, which gets only a couple hundred Qs and As per day, we think Wondir's numbers say it all, especially when you consider the relative size of our company.

Google Unifying Logins - iBLOGthere4iM

Google Unifying Logins - iBLOGthere4iM Interesting development, as merger and acquisition mania may soon let the big players- Google, Yahoo, MSN (already trying w/ Passport) participate in the identity-movement (watered-down version known as the "single sign-on movememt"). Not nearly as good as having a single identity for ALL web properties, but better than having different logins for all Google properties, all Yahoo properites, etc. It's a start. Still like to see Sxip or the other identity players take this all the way home...

QTSaver: Microcontent Engine

Zeev on his new Microcontent Engine. I got to try it out the other day and found it very different and very cool. Hopefully he'll have some of the real-time engine APIs as options available soon as well. I had no idea what QT Saver was until Zeev let me take it for a spin. It's really a search engine that delivers large snippets of microcontent and displays them as results, rather than links. Reminiscent of Answerbus and a few of the blog engines, but he's got a new slant. Worth watching how this develops.

pc4media: Marc Canter & Dave Winer Team Up to Push Microformats!

Pete on Marc and Dave on Microformats

Good to see Marc and Dave's mighty brains teaming up on something like this. I approached Marc not to long ago about possible Q&A microformats in particular. Summed it up here. Although Arnaud, Pete and Cori have given me highly-informed input on how to create a blogospheric Wondir that doesn't necessarily depend on a Q&A microformat, it may still have value as a side project to keep on the horizon, as Qs and As are a very distinct pair-unit of microcontent.

Skype opens IM and Presence to the world - iBLOGthere4iM

Link: Skype opens IM and Presence to the world - iBLOGthere4iM. Good for them. It couldn't come on a scarier day for Skype though, given the launch of Google Talk, which I've tried and have to say I like. I dowloaded Skype last year but was too confused to move forward with it right away- not Skype's fault but mine. But I do have to give it to Google- simplicity is golden.

The Wondir of Car Talk

You know the Tom & Ray Car Talk show? Well we're proud to annouce a partnership with Tom and Ray’s counterpart website- CarTalk.com (you can see the partnership here). If you've got car questions or answers, please jump in. The CarTalk community has already asked and answered thousands of car questions.

The Washington Post on Wondir

This piece in the Post coincided with our press release today. Here are a few of the milestones highlighted:

  • Wondir has reached 2 million searchable questions and answers (all user-generated content). Over 2 million pages of Q&A content total.
  • Wondir has passed 175,000 members.
  • Over 200,000 unique users have answered at least one question at Wondir.
  • Wondir's currently averaging about 8,000 questions and 11,000 answers posted each day (that's a new question or answer posted every 5 seconds or so).

A huge thanks to our devoted regulars (bondhunter being the prolific blogger in the bunch) for getting us here. The tipping point may be in sight :)
