Software Only: Google BlogSearch: forget authority, trust, link ranking and dust off the old tricks ?

Jeff on Google BlogSearch As he points out, it seems the title field is key. In a way, it looks like you can use keywords in the title field to quasi-tag your post for inclusion in Google BlogSearch. Not sure they look at other tags.

Hodderization

Mary Hodder delves still deeper into her widely-read analysis of interpersonal blogospheric dynamics, hmmm, I mean, link-love among bloggers :)  Her emphasis is towards a "community based algorithm" and has a wide range of bloggers chiming in. Worth the long read, as always. Mary's one of the deepest and most insightful thinkers in this space, imho.

pc4media: Blog Social Network Analysis

Pete on the latest from Mary.

When I first heard blogging and social network being used in the same breath a couple years ago, I didn't make the connection at all. My take was that blogging is easy online publishing; social networking is a completely different animal, amounting to creating an online network of n-degree friends and maybe interacting with them for any number of reasons from dating to doing deals. The only connection I saw was that blogging and social networking were both popular Web 2.0 apps.

But now, having blogged for a bit, I see that they really are perhaps in the same species, and have had offspring, such as Rojo. Blogging is only ostensibly publishing and syndicating thoughts to an unknown audience, and really more about pinging your friends (via links, trackbacks, etc) about your thoughts on what they're thinking or to get their thoughts on what you're thinking. I blog knowing that I probably only have a couple regular readers (who I in turn read each day) and I'm really just talking to them, and anyone else who wants to stop by I suppose. In that sense, it's a very organic SN.

Btw, I wonder what Pete would think of how persuadio's MyDensity visually identifies one's link network. Not sure it shows connections between those that are linking to you, but would be interesting if so, maybe Mitch will add that at some point if not.

Aside to Pete-  Although I'm not sure he's linked to the Wondiring blog  in particular, John has written pieces about what Wondir's doing with search here and here. He was also supportive when I met him briefly at Gnomedex this year. I don't think this subtracts from your point, however, about the intricacies of links b/c linkers :)

Typepad easy-post feature

Any Typepad bloggers out there know how I can get the Typepad IE or Firefox plugin (maybe it's a bookmarklet) so I can blog sites and posts I find on the fly without directly logging in to my Typepad account? I know Typepad has the feature, but can't remember where the link for it is. (feel free to respond here or post a reply to this question at Wondir).

Why the different results at the RSS engines?

Why is it that I get often different results when running a keyword or URL search at Technorati, Feedster, IceRocket and other RSS engines, or even when using PubSub's prospective search (the forward-looking real-time-component notwithstanding, of course)? I often find myself going to each engine or tool to make sure I haven't missed anything. Do they search different sections of the blogosphere/syndisphere? Is there a meta-RSS engine that brings together the results of all the RSS engines into one? Right now, Technorati, Feedster and PubSub remain my home-bases, and of course do a lot more than RSS search, so would remain so either way.

On Trackback Etiquette

Saw this at pc4media. Looks like rule #1 is don't trackback to another post unless you're linking to it as well in the body of your own post. Have to admit that I trackback frequently, and I'm not sure, at least when I was just getting started, that I've always linked to the post I'm trackbacking to, although I think they go hand in hand, so may have always done it without thinking about it. It does seem to go without saying that if you're trackbacking to someone's post, it should be relevant enough that you're linking to them as well in the body of your own post. That's a good test. Otherwise it's borderline trackback spam and you're probably just doing it to get traffic without giving it.
